Nell Goodarzi shares her transformative journey and why cultural intelligence matters in global business
When Nell Goodarzi experienced burnout and a health crisis, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery that would reshape her entire professional identity. Now, as an executive advisor working with clients across Asia, the Middle East, and the United States, she helps other leaders navigate the difficult terrain of career transformation and finding fulfillment beyond monetary success.
Her story, featured on the CLEARly Beneficial podcast hosted by Sacramento-based healthcare consultant Vincent Catalano, offers a roadmap for executives seeking to course-correct their careers and build resilience in both professional and personal life.
From Corporate Success to Personal Crisis
Goodarzi’s transition wasn’t a sudden epiphany—it was the result of mounting stress, burnout, and ultimately a health crisis that forced her to confront fundamental questions about her life direction. During world travel that included a pivotal trip to Ibiza, where she later met Catalano and his wife Kerrie, she gained clarity about her path forward.
“I needed to understand who I was beyond my corporate identity,” Goodarzi shared during the episode, describing how the health crisis became a catalyst for stepping back and reflecting on her true priorities.
The conversation explored a common pattern among people leaving corporate roles: the tendency to seek opposite experiences, such as becoming yoga teachers in Bali. However, Goodarzi emphasized that finding one’s true calling is far more nuanced and requires time, experimentation, and honest self-reflection.
Building Authentic Connections in a Digital World
One of the most striking aspects of Goodarzi’s business evolution is how she built her entire client base organically—without a single cold outreach email or traditional sales pitch. Her strategic approach began with building her personal brand on Instagram before transitioning to LinkedIn, where she could reach her professional network.
“While my clients weren’t on Instagram, the platform helped me learn social media skills in a low-stakes environment before moving to LinkedIn,” Goodarzi explained.
The results speak volumes. Through authentic content and genuine human connections—meeting potential clients in coffee shops, yoga classes, and even saunas—Goodarzi attracted all her clients through real relationships rather than conventional business development tactics.
Catalano noted the rapid acceleration of Goodarzi’s business over the past eight to ten months, though Goodarzi felt the process had been more gradual. Both agreed on the fundamental importance of real human relationships in sustainable business success.
An Unexpected Global Practice
What Goodarzi initially envisioned as a London and Europe-focused practice evolved into something far more international. Today, most of her clients come from Asia, the Middle East, and the United States—a geographic distribution she never anticipated when starting out.
Her clients share common threads: they’re navigating career pivots, seeking fulfillment and impact beyond monetary rewards, and working to identify and address blind spots that may be preventing them from achieving their goals. Notably, these clients tend to be highly self-aware individuals who have already invested significantly in personal development but recognize the value of external guidance.
The Critical Role of Cultural Intelligence
A significant focus of the conversation centered on cultural intelligence in international business—an area where Goodarzi brings unique expertise and passion. She emphasized how cultural differences fundamentally impact leadership approaches, business practices, and the success of global expansion efforts and mergers and acquisitions.
Goodarzi shared a concrete example of a cultural misstep during a business meeting in Riyadh to illustrate the potential consequences of not understanding local customs and business norms. The lesson was clear: cultural intelligence isn’t a nice-to-have skill—it’s essential for success in global business.
Catalano echoed this sentiment, noting the significant costs associated with cultural misfits in business and emphasizing the critical importance of preparing adequately for international expansion. His own experience working across diverse sectors of the healthcare industry reinforced the value of understanding organizational and cultural dynamics.
Individual Coaching Meets Corporate Transformation
While Goodarzi initially focused exclusively on one-to-one coaching work, corporate consulting emerged as a natural evolution of her business. She now maintains a dual focus on individual executive coaching and corporate consulting, with particular passion for improving leadership and driving cultural change within organizations.
“There is a place for both individual and corporate coaching,” Goodarzi noted. “I want to help improve leadership and drive cultural change within corporations.”
This integrated approach allows her to impact both individual leaders seeking personal transformation and entire organizations working to evolve their cultures and leadership practices—particularly as they expand into new international markets or navigate complex mergers and acquisitions.
Creating Space for Authentic Conversations
The episode concluded on a personal note, with Goodarzi sharing her favorite wine destination: the Antinori vineyard in Tuscany. This detail sparked Catalano’s interest given his upcoming trip to Milan, demonstrating the natural rapport and authentic connection that characterizes the podcast’s approach.
Catalano’s independence as a consultant allows him to host conversations that others in the industry may be unable to facilitate due to corporate constraints. His goal with the CLEARly Beneficial podcast is to create a platform for balanced, informative, and non-judgmental discussions featuring diverse guests from various sectors.
“I wanted to create a platform where we can have real conversations,” said Catalano, whose 22 years working across the healthcare ecosystem—from health systems and insurers to medical groups and point solution providers—brings a unique perspective to discussions about transformation, leadership, and business innovation.
